What are Nitrile O-Rings?

A synthetic rubber material that is extremely versatile, nitrile is used for seals due to its ability to resist common chemicals including petrol, oil, acid and alkalines.

Nitrile, otherwise known as Buna-N or NBR can withstand temperatures ranging from -40c to +108c, and it is even used in aeronautical and nuclear applications. It also offers good resistance to abrasion and compression set.

Nitrile ‘O’ rings offer a reliable and cost-effective option for a wide range of general-purpose applications.

What are nitrile o-rings used for?

Seen as the general purpose o-ring, nitrile o-rings are used in a wide range of applications and environments. They offer good resistant sealing properties against water, gasoline, petroleum oils, crude oil, propane and some hydraulic fluids, at a reasonable cost. They are used in lots of industries and applications world wide, including automotive, aircraft fuel systems, marine applications and more.

Nitrile is also perfect for medical devices, as it causes less allergic reactions to common substances such as latex and rubber.

How long do nitrile o-rings last?

Typically, a good quality nitrile o-ring will has a shelf life of 15 years. However, proper storage conditions are pivotal to ensure this shelf life, with factors including;

Storage Temperature: must be between 59°F (15°C) and 100°F (38°C)

Relative Humidity (RH): must be less than 75% unless stored in sealed moisture proof bags

Light: Material must be protected from direct sunlight and/or intense artificial light having U.V. content
